Africa Humanitarian Medical Corps (AHMC) is a humanitarian health organization committed to advancing equitable access to quality eye health services across underserved communities in Africa.
Through community-based eye health interventions, clinical outreach, surgical services, health education and capacity strengthening, we work to prevent avoidable blindness, restore vision and strengthen the systems that enable communities to access essential eye care.
Founded by Dr. Bildad Okwama, a practicing ophthalmologist, AHMC brings together medical expertise, community partnerships and humanitarian action to address barriers to eye health where the need is greatest.
Our vision is simple: a continent where access to quality eye care is not determined by geography, income or circumstance.

AHMC is working to close this gap. Our approach combines direct service delivery with community engagement, prevention, education and local capacity development — creating pathways to eye care that extend beyond individual medical interventions.
We promote awareness, early detection and prevention of avoidable blindness through community outreach, eye health education and targeted awareness initiatives.
We bring essential eye health services closer to underserved populations through community screening, referrals, treatment, cataract surgery and access to appropriate vision correction.
We work with community health workers, local health professionals and community structures to strengthen early identification, referral and continuity of care.
We seek to create lasting improvements in eye health by strengthening local capacity, developing strategic partnerships and supporting approaches that can be sustained and scaled within communities.

Supporting access to cataract surgery and other essential ophthalmic interventions for people who face financial, geographic or systemic barriers to treatment.
Equipping communities with knowledge about eye health, common eye conditions, prevention, early detection and the importance of seeking timely care.
Strengthening the capacity of frontline health workers and community-based teams to recognize common eye conditions, provide basic eye health information and facilitate timely referral.
Vision & Rehabilitation Support: connecting individuals experiencing visual impairment with appropriate clinical, corrective and supportive services to help them maintain independence and participate fully in community life.

Across Africa, access to eye care remains uneven. Rural communities, low-income households and populations living far from specialist health facilities often face significant barriers to diagnosis and treatment. AHMC works to bridge these gaps by bringing eye health services closer to communities while creating stronger pathways between community-level screening and appropriate clinical care.
When people can see, they are better able to learn, work, move independently, care for their families and participate in their communities.
Preventable and treatable vision loss can therefore have consequences far beyond an individual's health — affecting education, livelihoods, household wellbeing and community development.
